Calculation Summary
1 Income Zakat Calculation Formula
Income zakat in Malaysia is usually calculated using the net income method. The basic formula is:
(Gross Income - Allowable Deductions) x 2.5%
Allowable deductions (Had Kifayah) cover basic needs for yourself, your wife, children, parents, and EPF contributions.
2 What Is Income Zakat?
Income zakat is levied on income earned by Muslims from lawful sources, including employment, business, rentals, or gifts. It is a portion of wealth that must be paid when the conditions of Nisab (minimum threshold) and Haul (one-year period) are met.
- Obligatory for every free Muslim who meets the conditions.
- Meets the Nisab threshold (the value of 85g of gold).
- Income comes from lawful, permissible sources.
- The zakat rate remains at 2.5%.
3 Example Scenario

| Less Personal Allowance (Had Kifayah) | (12,000) |
| Less EPF Contributions | (6,600) |

| Zakat (41,400 x 2.5%) | 1,035.00 |
